Autistic Children of America is not a legitimate charity

The Better Business Bureau gives a passing grade to legitimate charities only. For those they doubt, they try to be as clear as possible that nothing about them sounds legitimate.

I looked up Autistic Children of America, and found out it goes by four other names.

Autism Spectrum Disorder Foundation
Autistic Children of America
ASDF
Autism Awareness Program
Autism Disorder Foundation

Here is the writeup:  Better Business Bureau

I researched them because my aging mother had been giving to them until I put a stop to it. They send real-looking print mailings.

Update as of 1/28/2018: They now appear to have a website under one of the names I listed, and you can find that website through the Better Business Bureau link above.

However, the BBB still has nothing good to say. The presence of a website can, in this case, imbue false confidence.

  1. They called me and they were rude on the phone. They said, oh someone finally answered the phone instead of an answering machine. It was early morning, and for some reason I agreed to give them 30 dollars, probably because I work with Autistic children. I did have the foresight to say I don't give money over the phone, you will have to mail me something. Thanks for posting the information, you have to be careful out there.

    1. They called me numerous times, and I work with people that have autism so I do donate to related charities at work. But when a telemarketer calls me daily and has it show as PRIVATE NUMBER, I already doubt the reputation. I told them I would do research on their charity before I make a contribution. thanks for your input as well. Regards.

  2. They just called me and I'm glad I looked this up while the telemarketer was on the call. I mentioned this and the caller was speechless.

    1. They just called me from a restricted number (on my cell phone) , claimed I had donated in the past and I was glad I looked up the name. Not finding them on Charity Navigator and haveing no memory of donating in the past, I declined. Glad I did! Thx.

  3. Just got a very sophisticated robocall from "Autistic Children of America", with an extremely realistic voice and ability to read key words and respond with scripted content. I mentioned looking them up on Charity Navigator to see what their costs were - the bot recognized this and responded in a full sentence - "After fundraising and administrative expenses, a full 15% goes to families needing help to raise their autistic children." Freaking creepy.

  4. I received a call and promised a pledge. This condition is near and dear to me so I was ready to fall for it. The mailer came and I decided to look them up. They don't even have a website and I was so glad to find your article!

    1. Glad you didn't take the bait. Do know, however, that they will now sell your address. Just something to be aware of.

  6. Something didn't seem right - I don't give over the phone so I requested a mailer - then decided to look them up. I even called their phone number at 10:30 at night and it just says you've reached our 800 number and please call back during normal business hours. Every legitimate business gives their name in an answering machine message!

  7. They not only do not have a website - but when you call it just says you've reached our 800 number please call back during regular business hours. What kind of business doesn't respond with their name in the message?!

  8. How can I do something to help autistic children in my own country India

  9. They phoned me also, I pledged $15, but when I looked them up I could find anything positive, so I donated to Autism Society of America and sent Autistic Children of America a copy of my donation, hope they get the idea.
